Qld: Gold Coast high rise apartment taller than the rest
Queensland's Gold Coast is to get yet another high-rise building -- and one to put
its other residential towers in the shade.
The Sunland group is planning the $250 million project on a hectare of land near the
heart of Surfers Paradise.
It says its proposed 200-metre tall tower would be some 20 storeys taller than any
other high-rise on the Coast.
And it says the building's roofline is unique: influenced by the design of the Sydney
Olympics torch, and likely to be "the talk of the town".
Civic leaders say the complex would be a tourist drawcard -- while environmentalists
believe it could drive visitors away and surflovers say it'll cast a shadow on the beach.
The planned development includes more than 400 apartments, two two-storey $5 million
penthouses, a shopping precinct, a multi-level "rainforest" atrium -- and perhaps an observation
deck.
A building application is expected to go to the local council within the next two
months and it's hoped construction can begin early next year.

NSW: Striking cleaners to consider new peace offer
SYDNEY, April 7 AAP - More than 2000 striking school and public building cleaners will
meet next week to consider a new peace offer from their employer.
Menzies Property Services has made an improved offer to 2200 employees, prompting the
Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union to to recommend that its members vote
on Monday to return to work.
The cleaners stopped work today to protest against the company's plans to cut working
hours by 24 per cent.
The peace offer includes a lesser reduction in working hours and increased job security,
a statement issued by the union today said.
Under the cuts originally planned by Menzies Property Services, the union claimed cleaners
would have just six minutes to clean a classroom and three minutes to clean a toilet.

VIC: I bear Barratt no ill will, says Howard
MELBOURNE, Aug 20 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard said today he did not bear Defence
Department Secretary Paul Barratt any ill will, but would not comment on his future.
The Federal Court today ordered the Commonwealth to pay all legal costs sustained by Mr
Barratt in his challenge to the dismissal, after yesterday confirming the government was
entitled to remove him as long as it provided reasons for his dismissal.
Justice Peter Hely yesterday ruled Mr Barratt was entitled to be told the reason for his
proposed sacking and be given an opportunity to argue why he should not be removed.
Mr Barratt warned it would cost the federal government $1 million to sack him.
Mr Howard said he was not surprised by yesterday's court finding and the government would
follow the law of the country as declared by Justice Hely.
Mr Barratt had a right to take his case to court, but the situation had not been helped by
the deliberate courting of publicity, he said.
"I have nothing against him (Mr Barratt) personally, but I just think there has been a
little bit of embellishment at the edges as far as the character of the relationship is
concerned," Mr Howard said, referring to reports they had been close friends for 20 years.
"I can only repeat that I bear him no personal ill will or malice."

NSW: Adams still seeks John Howard s support
SYDNEY, Feb 27 AAP - Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams said today he remained hopeful that Prime
Minister John Howard would become personally involved in Ireland's push for autonomy from
Britain.
Mr Howard has refused to meet the Northern Irish political leader during his Australian
tour.
Mr Adams said Ireland's push for independence had progressed notably through talks with
other world leaders such as South Africa's Nelson Mandela and US President Bill Clinton.
He made the comments today at the 1999 Wallace Wurth Memorial Lecture at the …

VIC: Vic govt and Oppn give differing views of ABS tax figures
MELBOURNE, Dec 9 AAP - The Victorian government and Opposition today gave greatly differing
interpretations of new Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures on the states tax
levels.
Treasurer Alan Stockdale said the ABS figures, released today, showed Victoria was the only
state to reduce taxes during 1997-98 and that Victorian taxes were now well below those of New
South Wales.
"Victorias taxation level as a percentage of gross state product is also now below the
national average, 6.94 per cent compared with 7.01 per cent."
He said since 1997-98, Victorias taxes had fallen $132 million.
But Labor treasury spokesman Steve Bracks said the ABS figures showed that ordinary
Victorians were paying about four per cent more in taxes than the national average.
"Alarmingly, these statistics do not take into account the raft of hidden Kennett
government taxes," Mr Bracks said in a statement.
"The reality is that under this government, ordinary Victorians are being taxed from the
cradle to the grave."
